Academy of Debating and Public Speaking

The Academy of Debating and Public Speaking offers a quality program that caters for students from a range of abilities. The programs are designed to encourage rigorous and critical thinking that develops self-confidence and communication skills.

There are a range of programs and competitions available to cater for different levels of experience. Students who are trying public speaking and debating for the first time are encouraged to join in the social programs usually held at the beginning and end of the year. These programs are designed to introduce and develop the fundamentals of public speaking and debating and is done in a highly social and supportive environment. Active and maximum participation are prioritised in these programs.

Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to participate in external public speaking and debating competitions against other schools such as the Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition, CSDA Public Speaking and Debating Competition and Archdale Debating Competitions, each offering different levels of challenge for our students.

Furthermore, there are often opportunities for students to support the programs in a voluntary capacity, for example, acting as chairpersons and timekeepers during debates. This is an excellent way to become familiar with the program while making friends. The coaches typically run workshops for the volunteers so they too can develop their skills.

Furthermore, when the College hosts home debates, the student volunteers demonstrate College values in practice, especially hospitality. The Debating and Public Speaking Programs are overseen by a Debating and Public Speaking Academy Convenor who is supported by specialist coaches and adjudicators engaged by the College. These coaches work together as a team to design and implement training sessions and provide tailored feedback for our students.
