International Tour
Blast off for MSB Space Tour
During the April school holidays a very excited group of 14
students from Years 9, 10 and 11, along with 3 teachers, travelled
to the United States of America to take part in Space Camp.
The trip was a Science and Mathematics initiative and was the
first ever venture of this kind undertaken by the College. It was
coordinated by Mrs Jane Easterbrook, Head of Science, with the
assistance of Mrs Lisa Dean and Mrs Leanne Sylvester.
The 10 day trip was packed with opportunities for the “Space
Campers” to experience scientific wonders. From the moment
they landed in Orlando, Florida the adventures began. At I-fly
Orlando they donned flight gear and experienced feeling as
light as a feather as they put the laws of physics to the test. This
was followed by a Boggy Creek airboat ride through the Florida
Everglades to experience the ecosystem first hand. No trip to
Orlando would be complete without at least one visit to a theme
park. There was a day full of thrills and fun at Universal’s Islands
of Adventure where Harry Potter World was a favourite for the
girls. The corridors and classrooms of Hogwarts came to life and
Butter Beer was the beverage of choice.
The famous Cocoa Beach was to the group’s base for the
highlight of the trip; three days filled with amazing experiences of
the cosmos at Kennedy Space Camp. The time at Kennedy Space
Centre was an educational experience that opened the eyes of
the girls to the history and wonder of space travel as they were
launched into a galaxy of fun and learning. The girls participated
in hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics
activities led by incredibly knowledgeable educators. They tested
their endurance on the Multi-Axis Trainer and Microgravity Wall
and experienced a simulated space shuttle flight. Two absolute
highlights of Space Camp were having lunch with Astronaut
Don Thomas and standing nose to nose with the Space Shuttle
Atlantis. The girls left Space Camp with minds full of wonder and
dreams of travelling to space.
On their final stop the group walked the streets of Washington DC,
marvelling at monuments and memorials, experienced national
treasures and got up close to the White House. The trip was
perfectly timed with over 3000 cherry blossom trees surrounding
the tidal basin in full blossom for the Cherry Blossom Festival.
With the focus of the trip being Science, visits to the Smithsonian
National Air and Space Museum and the Smithsonian Museum of
Natural History were a matter of necessity!
The trip was a wonderful experience for all involved. The girls
returned home with stories and memories that will stay with
them, their minds opened to the wonders of science and the
universe and the belief that the impossible becomes possible if
we have strength and determination.
