Information Resources Centre

The Information Resources Centre (IRC) is a dynamic learning space, located in the heart of the College, which supports the information needs of students and staff.

The IRC provides access to the College’s extensive resource collection in a comfortable, air-conditioned teaching and learning centre.

Library and information services have changed dramatically over the past decade and the IRC is now a 24/7 learning centre with access to the library catalogue, subscription databases and other online digital resources from the College learning management system at any time and from anywhere. Bennies LibGuides has been recently introduced enabling IRC staff to provide students with a starting point for their research and reading needs. Overdrive gives students access to reading material and audio recordings to use on laptops and portable compatible devices enabling more recreational reading in the digital age.

The IRC is no longer a silent place with a range of spaces for different purposes:

  • a reading area is for quiet reflection, thinking and reading in a comfortable environment with lounges, cushions, small round tables and cushioned chairs.
  • a collaborative classroom enables classes and large groups of students to work with the Teacher Librarians on acquiring information literacy and digital literacy skills whilst also having access to fiction and non-fiction texts, journals and audio-visual materials.
  • a Senior Area enables senior students to study independently and view career material assisting students in their transition from secondary to tertiary students.

All students and staff have access to their own individual College laptop to use both within the College and at home and the Teacher Librarians work closely with teaching staff to ensure all students have the information literacy, visual literacy, critical literacy and digital literacy skills essential for the 21st century.

Students are also encouraged to participate in a wide range of curriculum and extra-curricular activities supported by the IRC staff: Bennies Book Club, reading competitions such as the Premier’s and the College Principal’s Reading Challenge, workshops for using the digital resources on the College laptop and Children’s Book Week and Literacy and Numeracy Week competitions. Student work is regularly showcased within the IRC and visually on the IRC digital signage.

The IRC is staffed by academically trained staff, two Teacher Librarians and two Library Technicians and is open from 8.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Thursday and 8.00am to 4.00pm Friday. Extended opening hours ensure equitable access for all students along with the 24/7 access to the learning management system.
